Night in Gethsemane

2,000 year old trees in the Garden of Gethsemane

The Garden of Gethsemane, near the foot of the Mount of Olives, is where Jesus went to pray the night of His betrayal and arrest. The night before He was crucified. Beside the garden is the Church of All Nations, which was constructed over the rock where Jesus prayed in agony, prior to His betrayal by Judas Iscariot. On this rock Jesus’ sweat “became like drops of blood falling on the ground.”

Matthew 26: 36-46, Luke 22: 44

Lyrics

Jesus went with them, to a place called Gethsemane
Told his disciples sit here while I go over there and pray
Then taking Peter and two sons of Zebedee
He became sorrowful sorrowful and troubled

He said My soul is very sorrowful even unto death
Remain here and watch with me
Going on a little further
He fell on his face and prayed
My Father if it is possible let this chalice pass From me
Never the less, not as I will but as you will

And he came to His disciples and he found them sleeping
And he said to Peter “So, could you not watch with me one hour
Watch and pray that you do not enter into temptation
The spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak

Again for the Second time He went away and prayed
And there appeared to Him an angel from heaven
And being in agony He prayed more earnestly
And His sweat became like drops of blood falling down upon the ground

Then He Came to the disciples and said to them
“Are you still sleeping and taking your rest
Behold the hour is at hand
The Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners
Rise, let us be going, see, my betrayer is at hand
