The Seven Last Words

The spot of the Crucifixion

As Jesus hung on the cross crucified, He had seven last sayings according to Holy Scripture, prior to His death. These became known as The Seven Last Words of Jesus. He spoke these words from the cross, on Calvary Hill which is now located inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. At the time of the crucifixion, Calvary was outside the city walls. Subsequently, Jerusalem expanded incorporating the hill within her walls.

Luke 23: 33-34, Luke 23: 39-43, John 19:25-27, Mark 15: 33-34, John: 19: 28-29, John 19: 30, Luke 23: 44-46

Lyrics

When the scribes and chief priests persisted
Pilate granted their demand, and delivered Jesus to their will
They led Him away Through the crowds and lamenting women
To a place called the Skull Calvary Hill

There like the lowest criminal
Jesus was crucified
Yet He showed His mercy upon those who
Tortured His life away, as those who witnessed heard Him pray
“Father, forgive them, they know not what they do”

They taunted, mocked, and laughed, chanting
“King of the Jews”
Then the good thief who hung next to him cries
“Jesus remember me, when you come into your kingdom”
Jesus said to him
“Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise”

They parted his garments among themselves for his vesture they cast lots
His mother, aunt, and Mag’dalene were near Him with John
And looking toward Mary and his beloved disciple
He said “Woman, behold thy son.” and to John “behold your mother”

All who see me scoff at me
Mock me with parted lips and wag their heads
He relied on the Lord
Let Him deliver Him
Rescue Him and set Him free

O Lord be not far off
O my help hasten to my aid
“My God, My God
Why have you abandoned me?”

Indeed many dogs surround me
A pack of evildoers closes in upon me
They have pierced my hands and my feet
It could not be worse

My strength is dried
My tongue cleaves to my jaws
To satisfy the scriptures
Jesus said “I Thirst”

When Jesus received the vinegar
He said “It is Finished”

The sun failed, earth shook, rocks split
All could see and hear it
The temple curtain tore in two when Jesus cried out with a loud voice
“Father Into your hands,
I commend my spirit”

The Centurion witnessed all and said
“Certainly this man was innocent”
And the multitudes scattered away
Beating their breasts
